Episode 1

Pop was the oldest of the trainees, and “oldest” should never be confused with “most capable.”
It was their first unchaperoned mission, and the first thing he had done was argue with his twin sister, Pip, over who had the right to fly the spaceship. Pop was the oldest, but Pip had the best grade in flying. Eventually, size won out, and Pip took the wheel while Pop sulked in the back.

ep.1

They were headed to Barring, a small icy planet isolated in the middle of nowhere. General Dikken, the man in charge of their training, told them they were going to investigate reports of a space monster living deep underground on Barring. If the threat was real, the general said, they could have to evacuate the planet and send in a full army to battle the monster.
In reality, Dikken had only figured that the lone captain on guard there would enjoy the company of the six children, or at the very least, be able to put up with them far better than anyone else back on Wern.

About halfway to Barring, a problem was discovered. Or possibly made just for the sake of having a problem. Barring was several light years from Wern, and the trainees were getting bored.
Bee, the daughter of Wernler lieutenant Gorror, began picking a fight with Hai, the daughter of two farmers who had enrolled her in the space academy to give her a better life.

War ensued.
Pop stayed out of the fight, despite sitting beside the main warrior. Unable to concentrate on her flying, Pip shouted for her brother to do something.

“Can I fly the ship?”

Exasperated, Pip agreed to let him drive for the few minutes it would take her to settle the fight. As Pop slid into the front seat, beaming, a further disaster struck.

Pip retorted that he’d better fix it, or she’d tell General Dikken that this whole mission was entirely his fault. That was when Hai interrupted to break the news she’d just discovered–

“Hey, Pip? The transmitter isn’t working.”

Could this day get any worse?
